Maintenance & Inspection of your tank system

Safety inspection & maintenance to prevent damage and extend service life

In the "Ordinance on Facilities for Handling Substances Hazardous to Water" (AwSV), the legislator has regulated the monitoring and inspection obligations of the operator as well as the plant documentation of tank systems.

Regular testing of the system's tightness and the functionality of the safety devices are also part of the

§46 AwSV regulated.

What many operators of a heating oil tank system do not know is that if there is damage to the building or even to the environment, the owner is liable, even if he is insured, unless he provides proof of regular inspections or the heating oil tank system no longer corresponds to the state of the art .

maintenance of tank system

We recommend that you carry out regular maintenance and safety inspections of your tank system once a year, also as part of a maintenance contract, where we automatically remind you of the annual inspection due and arrange an appointment.

Scope of the safety inspection

Verification of functional safety by means of an optical inspection of the system and the visible connected lines and fittings

Each functional test of the oil tank includes the following criteria:

  • tightness on all sides

  • Brittleness of plastic and battery tanks

  • Corrosion and rust on metal tanks (external inspection)

  • condition of the supply and discharge lines

  • tightness and fit of the connections

  • Functional test of the limit switch

  • oil leak

  • Functional test of anti-siphon valve, if present

  • Checking the drip tray (for battery tank/basement tank systems)

  • Checking the dome shaft for leaks and cleanliness (for underground tanks)

Safety inspection and maintenance of the leak detector

With a leak warning device, leaks in the tank are reported in good time with a visual and acoustic signal. An annual inspection of the leak warning device by a WHG specialist company is required by law in accordance with the type approval.

In addition to the above-mentioned safety inspection, the maintenance of the leak detector includes the following service:

  • Checking the electrical connections.

  • Checking the individual switching points of the device (if there are deviations from the required values, the device is readjusted.)

  • Checking the general functional reliability, such as: checking the pump pressure and pump performance as well as leak testing the suction and measuring lines.

  • Cleaning of any filter in the suction line.

  • Final inspection (ventilation of the system until alarm pressure and testing of the alarm signal). After the final inspection has been carried out, the device is resealed.

  • For underground tanks, additionally check the flow of the leak fluid and check the leak warning device by pulling the leak probe out of the leak fluid container

tank check before expert inspection

As a heating oil tank operator, you are certainly already familiar with the inspection periods for expert approval :

  • Underground heating oil tanks (stored in the ground) must be inspected every 5 years.

  • Above-ground heating oil tanks (e.g. stored in the basement) with a capacity of more than 10,000 liters must be inspected every 5 years.

The following applies to tank systems in water protection and flood areas :

  • Underground tank systems (stored in the ground) must be inspected every 2 1/2 years.

  • Above-ground tanks (e.g. stored in the basement) with a capacity of more than 1,000 liters must be inspected every 5 years.

Have your tank checked by us before the expert inspection so that any small defects can be repaired. We are also happy to advise you on the current state of the art and carry out small repairs on site so that the expert inspection is carried out without any defects.

Preparation of an audit report / functional report

After the inspection/maintenance, you will receive an inspection report from us including a functional assessment for your records . This will provide proof to both the authorities and the insurance company that you are fulfilling your operating obligations and that you can also be assured that your tank system complies with current legal regulations and is state-of-the-art.

Leaflet Operating Instructions § 44 AwSV

As an operator, you must have operating instructions that contain a monitoring, maintenance and emergency plan and specify immediate measures to prevent adverse changes in the properties of water bodies. Feel free to download the leaflet here and display it in a clearly visible place near the facility.
